David Updike, like his father, tells a story where relationships are on display. However this story happens far away from Sammy's refrigerated isles of the grocery store. Homer and Sandra are piney summer camp, and we follow their interactions. This project will ask you to demonstrate what you have learned in the short fiction unit about how authors create meaning. So far we have focused on one device per story, but we have to understand that more goes on in these works than simply one device. You will be asked to focus on three (3) of the above literary devices. You may write a Williams-style-paper devoting a paragraph to each element or write a Sherbert-coverage-essay where elements are discussed as they come up.
